Department Of Microbiology

Overview

The Department of Microbiology at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College was established in 1988, which caters to the educational needs of undergraduate, postgraduate medical students and paramedical students. The MD course was started in 2004. PhD course was introduced in the year 2009. In addition to academics, it provides laboratory services to diagnose infectious diseases.

The laboratory is NABL accredited and equipped with Bact/Alert, Chemiluminescence assay, ELISA, PCR, Immunofluorescence and Lyophilizer. We take an active part in the surveillance of Health-care Associated Infection Control Programmes.

We have brought out a manual on Hospital infection control practices, CSSD manual and Antibiotic Policy for in house use. As a part of community service, the department appraises the notifiable diseases to the District health authorities.

The department pursues research with many publications on Infectious diseases. The department established COVID-19 testing centre which is accredited by NABL and recognized as Nodal Testing center by ICMR.

Objectives
  • To train undergraduate and post graduate medical and paramedical students in microbiology so that they can diagnose, treat and prevent infectious diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites
  • To provide 24x7 quality diagnostic services to patients with infectious diseases
  • To conduct research on infectious diseases suffered by the local community
  • To train the health care workers in safe handling of clinical material and safety precautions to be followed and in reducing Hospital associated infectious by conducting periodic workshops
