My MBBS journey at this institution was both enriching and transformative. The college offers an excellent balance of academic excellence, clinical exposure, research opportunities, and extracurricular activities such as sports and participation in intra- and inter-college fests, ensuring the holistic development of every student. The faculty members are highly supportive and dedicated to fostering not only medical knowledge but also professionalism, empathy, and leadership skills. One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience has been the opportunity to participate in and lead student-driven academic initiatives, including undergraduate medical conferences. These experiences have enhanced my organizational, communication, and teamwork skills while providing valuable platforms for academic exchange, research dissemination, and peer learning. The extensive clinical training, modern learning facilities, and strong emphasis on community engagement have prepared me to approach healthcare with competence and compassion. I am grateful for the mentorship, opportunities, and experiences that have shaped my growth as a future physician, and I am proud to be a part of an institution that empowers students to excel both within and beyond the classroom.
Dr. Arkadipta Das
2020 batch MBBS
When I first joined Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, I came with the dream of becoming a good doctor. As I look back today, I realize that the institution gave me something far greater—it shaped my character, strengthened my values, and transformed me into a more compassionate, confident, and responsible individual.
The greatest strength of the college, in my experience, has always been its people. I was fortunate to learn from faculty members who were not only exceptional teachers and accomplished clinicians but also mentors who genuinely cared about their students. Their guidance extended beyond textbooks and examinations, encouraging us to think critically, stay curious, and approach every patient with empathy and humility.
The academic training at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College is rigorous yet deeply rewarding. The preclinical and para-clinical years laid a strong scientific foundation, while the clinical postings brought medicine to life. Every ward round, outpatient clinic, emergency duty, and patient interaction became an opportunity to learn— not just about diseases, but about people. The trust patients placed in us as students taught me lessons that no textbook could ever impart.
One of the most valuable aspects of my clinical training was the exposure to the college’s world-class operation theatres, which are truly a state-of-the-art facility. I was given multiple opportunities to observe, assist, and even participate in a wide range of surgeries across different specialties. Being present in the OT and learning directly from experienced surgeons was an incredibly enriching experience. It helped me understand surgical principles, develop confidence in the operating room, and appreciate the precision, teamwork, and discipline that surgery demands. These experiences were instrumental in broadening my clinical perspective and deepening my respect for the art and science of operative medicine.
Among the most enriching parts of my training were the rural postings in the Government Hospital, where I encountered an extraordinary variety of cases. That experience was both humbling and deeply formative. There were moments when I had to make decisions independently for patients, and the responsibility of being trusted in that way taught me the true weight of medical practice. The respect and confidence patients showed me in those settings left a lasting impression and strengthened my sense of duty as a future physician.
Another unforgettable experience was working in the Mobile Health Unit—a multipurpose, multidisciplinary bus equipped to provide basic healthcare, diagnosis, and treatment to populations in far-flung remote areas of Karnataka who otherwise had limited access to hospitals. Serving as the Chief Medical Officer in that setting was one of the most challenging and rewarding roles I have ever undertaken. On some days, I had the opportunity to single-handedly manage more than 100 patients, and those long, demanding days taught me resilience, efficiency, clinical judgment, and the importance of delivering care with compassion, even under pressure.
I also had a great experience working in the Kolar OPDs, where multiple departments converge to provide free healthcare to the people of Kolar. The collaborative spirit of that setting was inspiring. It gave me the chance to observe how different specialties come together to serve a common purpose, and it reinforced my belief that medicine is at its best when it is accessible, coordinated, and patient-centered.
The Rural Health and Training Centre in Devarayasamudra was another place that left a deep impact on me. The experience there was natural, grounding, and humbling. It brought me closer to the realities of community healthcare and reminded me that meaningful medicine often begins at the grassroots level. Interacting with patients in that environment helped me appreciate the social, cultural, and economic factors that shape health and illness, and it strengthened my commitment to serving communities with sensitivity and respect.
Some of my most cherished memories were created outside the lecture halls. Whether it was participating in academic discussions, attending conferences, collaborating with friends during postings, or simply sharing late-night study sessions before examinations, every experience contributed to my growth. The friendships I built, the mentors I found, and the challenges I overcame have become an inseparable part of who I am today. Being recognized as the best outgoing student was especially meaningful to me, not as a personal milestone alone, but as a reflection of the encouragement, guidance, and support I received throughout my journey from faculty, peers, and the institution itself.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned here is that medicine is not merely about diagnosing and treating illness—it is about listening, understanding, reassuring, and serving with compassion. That philosophy was reflected every day in the way our teachers practiced medicine and inspired us to do the same.
As an alumnus, I carry immense gratitude and pride for my alma mater. Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College gave me far more than an MBBS degree—it gave me confidence in my abilities, resilience in the face of challenges, and a lifelong commitment to learning and ethical patient care. The years I spent here will always remain among the most meaningful of my life, and I will forever be grateful to the institution that laid the foundation of my journey in medicine.

Looking back, the six years I spent at SDUMC were some of the best of my life — though it didn't feel that way on day one, sitting nervous in the dissection hall. It built slowly: hostel nights spent quizzing each other before exams, seniors who quietly looked out for us without ever making it a big deal, festivals that turned the corridors into something worth staying up for. By the time internship came around, that foundation had turned into something close to instinct. My clearest memory from that year is a night duty — checking on a patient who was barely conscious himself, and having him ask if I'd eaten before I could even get a word in about how he was doing. No lecture taught me that. SDUMC did, just by putting me in rooms like that one, again and again, until moments like it stopped being surprising and started being the job. I carry that with me now, into my residency in the US — but SDUMC is where I actually learned it.

Life at Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research, Kolar turned out to be the most defining chapter of my medical journey. First year felt overwhelming until Physiology changed everything. Our professors had this gift for breaking down complex systems into stories that made sense. I still remember taking my first BP measurement - suddenly the human body wasn't just diagrams in a book, it was something alive and logical. That foundation of curiosity stayed with me through every clinical posting. The hands-on training at R.L. Jalappa Hospital was unmatched. From crowded OPDs to emergency calls, we were never just observers. The faculty across departments were approachable, pushed us to think, and treated us like future colleagues rather than students. SDUHER didn't just give me a degree. It gave me the confidence to take responsibility, the clarity to handle pressure, and a real respect for patient care that I carry into practice every day.

The biggest reason I remain fiercely proud of SDUMC- Kolar, apart from letting us grow into able doctors and citizens, is the balance it helped instill in most of us. We had a beautiful transition from college students to medical professionals. Engaging lectures, the occasional bunking, playfully competitive practicals, library debates, campus fests and sports, outreach camps and field visits, local adventures with friends, nervous clinical examinations, bonding with our first patients, we had it all, and more. Looking back, I think two likely reasons behind our strong learning foundations, were the continuous efforts that our teachers and staff had invested in, as well as a campus life that securely let us build strong memories and nurture stronger bonds, in a place away from the city and yet never remote. Alongside the rigors of robust medical training, we did get freedom, whether in academics or other activities, but it was always earned and never handed on a platter. It was after we left our alma mater and diverged into different fields and settings, that many of us realised how unique our experiences and recollections were, shaping us in more ways than we would think, and all for the better.
Dr. Sriya Gollamudi
MBBS, MS General Surgery, MCh Surgical Oncology
I joined Sri Devaraj URS Medical College in 2011 with the dream of becoming a doctor. As a first-generation doctor in my family, stepping into medical school and hostel life was both exciting and daunting. Over the next 5½ years, SDUMC truly became my home away from home. The college provided an exceptional learning environment with dedicated faculty, outstanding clinical exposure, state-of-the-art laboratories, a well-equipped library, and a tertiary care hospital that offered invaluable hands-on experience. Beyond academics, vibrant sports and cultural events made campus life enriching and memorable. It was during my final-year surgical postings at SDUMC that my passion for surgery took root—a passion that has now led me to pursue superspecialisation in Surgical Oncology. Looking back, SDUMC did far more than educate me; it laid the foundation for my career, instilled confidence, and shaped me into the doctor I aspire to be. I will always be grateful to my alma mater for giving me the knowledge, values, and opportunities that continue to guide my journey.

My MBBS at Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research, Kolar was foundational to who I am as a doctor today. I still remember the first year labs where complex concepts finally clicked - the faculty didn't just teach us how the human body works, they made us curious about why. That same depth and clarity carried through every department, backed by incredible clinical exposure at R.L. Jalappa Hospital. SDUAHER gave me strong academics, patient exposure, and mentors who genuinely cared. It shaped my approach to patient care from day one.

Some places teach you a profession, others shape the person you’ll become. Every day at SDUMC reminds me that a medical college is more than just studying to become a doctor. It's about learning from encouraging mentors, from the best patients, alongside motivated classmates. We get some of the most interesting cases and bizarre conditions from all over the area which further develops our clinical acumen and also the confidence and compassion needed to care for our future patients. We have many platforms to explore any avenue that you can think of. We have adequate sports facilities along with fests and conferences that help build team spirit, encourage healthy competition and promote leadership. SDUMC has enabled me to pursue my interests beyond academics, allowing me to actively engage in quizzing while also leading our national conference DeMedCon as its organizing secretary. Of course, no journey is complete without its obstacles but I can confirm that here, we have the support and resources to overcome them and help us prepare for real world problems. They also offer valuable exposure to the interpersonal and organizational dynamics that we may encounter in future professional settings. I think it's safe to say that I'm proud to be a future alumnus of this college.

The strong foundation built here continues to guide me every day in my practice, and I will always be proud to be a part of the SDUMC family.

When I entered this institution, I thought my journey would revolve around lectures, practicals, and examinations. Looking back as a final-year MBBS student, I realize it has been so much more than that. This college has provided me with opportunities that shaped me beyond academics. Serving as a Class Representative taught me the importance of leadership, responsibility, and representing the voices of my peers. As the founder of Vox Globalis, our Medical Model United Nations Club, I had the privilege of creating a platform that encouraged dialogue, collaboration, and leadership among students. Being the Organising Secretary of DEMEDCON further strengthened my ability to work with teams, coordinate large academic events, and appreciate the effort that goes into creating meaningful learning experiences. The encouragement I received to participate in research, conferences, and extracurricular initiatives helped me develop confidence and curiosity alongside my medical training. Equally valuable has been the clinical exposure, where every patient interaction has reinforced that medicine is as much about empathy and communication as it is about knowledge. What I value most about this institution is that it allows students to grow in ways that extend far beyond the curriculum. It has nurtured me not only as a future doctor but also as a leader, researcher, and responsible individual. As I prepare to graduate, I carry with me lessons that will stay with me throughout my career. I will always be grateful to this institution for providing an environment that challenged me, trusted me with responsibilities, and inspired me to make the most of every opportunity

My time at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College has been one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of my life. The college provided a strong academic foundation through its structured curriculum, regular classes, and incredibly supportive faculty who always encouraged us to learn beyond textbooks. The attached R.L. Jalappa Hospital gave me invaluable clinical exposure. With a strong patient load, I got hands-on experience from early years. The emphasis on safety during postings and facilities like the duty doctors’ room made long shifts productive. Hostel life became an important part of my MBBS journey. The spacious rooms, large windows, and the peaceful, lush-green surroundings made it feel like a home away from home. I especially loved the beautiful view outside the hostel, where the rows of trees almost looked like they were creating a natural pathway. My favorite place on campus, apart from the greenery, was the library, where I spent countless hours. Life at SDUMC was about much more than academics. Celebrating Navaratri, Ganesh Visarjan, and Parvah with friends, watching movies at the Silver Jubilee Auditorium, enjoying the misty winter mornings, and seeing the beautiful pink blossoms during summer made campus life truly special. Looking back, I feel grateful for everything Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College has given me—not just an MBBS degree, but lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and the confidence to step into the medical profession. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Looking back to when I held a doctor’s play kit’s stethoscope to holding a real one during clinical rotations, I realised that I’ve achieved the one big thing that my seven-year-old self would love to see the 21-year-old version of her doing here at SDUMC. This college did not just provide me with the opportunity to reach the goal of adding two initials before my name but has also taught me how to earn that name through the various exceptional student-friendly faculties, facilities, and platforms to showcase our extracurricular skills while learning medicine simultaneously. From participating in the State-level Annual Inter-collegiate Biochemistry Quiz - EPIGNOSIS 6 (2023) and singing at the Intra-college cultural festival PARVA in MSY1, winning First Place in a group Pathology Model-making Competition (2024) in MSY2, heading DeMedCon (2025) as the Organising Secretary and winning a prize in a literature club event in PLEXUS (2025) in MSY3, to being a part of the Magazine Committee for Abhjña’26 and of the Organising Committee of the State-level Conference KCACON (2026) in MSY4, all of these cherished endeavours have given me the courage and confidence to lead and get closer to my goals of being a well-rounded doctor. While also being given the opportunity to research ICMR-STS topics under the clearance of the established Ethical Committee at SDUMC, I am pursuing a research paper on “Audit on Antibiotic Usage in MICU at Tertiary Care Hospitals” under a Microbiology Professor as my Guide. The ward rounds with excellent patient-centred learning and friendly interactions under the learner-doctor system rather than mugging up knowledge in medicine have also motivated me to become a health professional worthy enough to treat patients physically and emotionally in real-time while having a fun life with enthusiastic colleagues/peers. I would love to see what’s in store for me when I become a proud alumnus of SDUMC.

When I first walked into Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, the building gave me a heavy sense of realisation—a feeling that I wasn't good enough, and that’s why I was here. Fast forward five and a half years: it was raining, and looking at that same building, I thanked it for who I have become. That building gave an ordinary guy the power, discipline, and experience to overcome the very institutions I once thought were unachievable. From research paper presentations to dramatics and fine arts, SDUMC equipped us to consistently outshine peers from K.S. Hegde, AFMC, BMC, Manipal, JSS, and JIPMER. It trusted me to represent the college at multiple international conferences, and serving as a Class Representative taught me the true weight of organisation and standing up for a community. Ultimately, SDUMC didn't just teach me medicine; it forged my character. It built a profound resilience within me, shaping me into a clinician who can work 24/7 for six days straight without a single complaint. It instilled true courage; watching my teachers stand fiercely by our side whenever things went wrong taught me the strength to stand up for myself and others. Most importantly, it gave me the audacity to dream big. I fondly remember how, after every student demand was fulfilled, my friends and I would immediately head back to the Principal and Vice Principal with an even bigger demand. The administration always navigated those difficulties to match the facilities to our expectations, teaching me that the biggest dreams are entirely achievable if you only have the grit to ask. I thank everyone who contributed to this transformation—my teachers, seniors, juniors, the PGs, the nursing and office staff, and the security annas. Ultimately, I thank SDUMC which introduced me to them all and gave me the power to dream higher.

The hospital exposure at SDUMC has been one of the most valuable aspects of my training. The high patient load and diverse range of cases provided me with extensive clinical experience and helped me develop practical skills, decision-making abilities, and a deeper understanding of patient care. The opportunities to learn through real-life clinical scenarios have been instrumental in preparing me for my medical career. Beyond academics, the friendships I made, the experiences I gained, and the memories I created here will always hold a special place in my heart. This college has given me a strong foundation as a doctor and has gifted me some of the most precious moments of my life. It is especially meaningful to me because it is here that I found my life partner, making my bond with SDUMC even more special.
