The Department of Microbiology at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College was established in 1988, which caters to the educational needs of undergraduate, postgraduate medical students and paramedical students. The MD course was started in the year 2004. PhD course was introduced in the year 2009. In addition to academics, the laboratory is NABL accredited providing diagnostic services. The Department plays a pivotal role in the surveillance of Health-care Associated Infection Control Programs. Manuals on Laboratory procedures, safety practices, hospital infection control practices, CSSD and Antibiotic Policy has been created for in house use. As a part of community service, the Department appraises the notifiable diseases to the District health authorities. The Department pursues research with many publications on Infectious diseases. The Department established COVID-19 testing centre in the year 2020 which is accredited by NABL and recognized as Nodal Testing center by ICMR. Value added course was conducted on Good Laboratory Practices. The Department was awarded the best department for the period of 2021–2022.
