The Department of Physiology was established in 1986 and has since evolved into a centre of excellence in medical education and research. The department was upgraded to offer MD Physiology in 2003, further expanding its academic scope with the initiation of the PhD program in 2013.

Faculty members are extensively trained in Medical Education and actively engage in both biomedical and educational research. The department emphasizes innovative teaching, learning, and evaluation methodologies to ensure the attainment of competency-based medical education (CBME) standards.
