Overview

The Department of Anaesthesiology was established in the year 1986 at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Tamaka, and Kolar. R L Jalappa Hospital and Research Centre (RLJH) Operation Theatre complex was started in 1995 at Tamaka, Kolar. At that time, the OT complex of RLJH was equipped with 12 major and 2 minor operation theatres. A ten bedded Intensive Care Unit catering different specialties was also a part of Anaesthesia department.In January 2019, the Critical Care complex comprising of 12 state of the art operating rooms and a 36 bedded Intensive Care Unit was inaugurated. All along, we have strived to meet the goal of RLJH to provide quality healthcare to the native people.For further details regarding clinical services, please refer hospital website.

The Medical Council of India recognized the department of Anaesthesiology of SDUMC in the year 1997 and permitted to admit 2 post graduates for Master degree in Anaesthesiology and 4 post graduates for diploma in anesthesiology. In the year 2012, MCI recognized 3 post graduates for Master Degree in Anaesthesiology and 4 post graduates for Diploma in Anesthesiology. In the year 2019, a decision was made by MCI to convert all the PG diploma seats to Master Degree in Anaesthesiology. Hence, since the 2019 academic year, SDUMC admitted 7 post graduates for master degree in department of Anaesthesiology.On 07th of November 2019, MCI inspectors evaluated the department and Board of Governors permitted SDUMC to increase post graduate degree seats from seven to twelve seats from the academic session 2020-2021. The postgraduate curriculum is well designed to develop the skills and to inculcate knowledge of the specialty.

We take pride in the success of the postgraduates who have graduated from this institution and are flourishing in various sub-specialties and super- specialties of Anaesthesia. Dr. Pradeep Kumar and Dr. Ananya Nanda have a completed fellowship in Cardiac Anaesthesia. Dr. Paari T.T.S., Dr. Manjunath T., Dr. Rakesh Ramachandra Bendre and Dr. Bon Sebastian qualified in Critical Care. Dr. Sathish H.J. and Dr. B.S. Sindhu have international fellowships in Pain management. Dr. Abhishek K.M. has completed fellowship in Regional Anaesthesia. Our students have also acquired international certifications like EDIC and EDAIC.

We understand the importance of quality research in medical education and providing quality patient care. Research Methodology workshops are conducted by the institution on a regular basis for postgraduates and faculty. Postgraduates are oriented and trained in clinical research through their dissertations. Apart from this, there are several ongoing clinical studies and several studies that have been published in national and international journals.
